In my latest NPR commentary, I take a good hard look at failure, and choke it down with a Coors Light. WRITTEN, ILLUSTRATED, AND WHAT THE HELL, EVEN SPOKEN by PETER MOORE
Good point! Though I’ve also seen studies that it is the very inconsequential nature of sports that make them a stress reliever. The importance of having something unimportant to care about!
I convinced Carol to watch the Leafs win game seven with me. Although she doesn't follow hockey even she knew that the Leafs just stunk in that game!! All the best to you both!! JRB
Great piece, Peter. Did you know my Dad, WTTW’s John Callaway? He LOVED the Cubs but didn’t live long enough to see his beloved Cubbies win the World Series. When they did, I cried for a long time on his behalf.
I can imagine! Ditto my dad the Red Sox fan, who died ten years before the Curse ended. I sent one up to him after they conquered—yes—the Rockies 4-0 in 2008. What a relief!
Aaron Judge hit his 18th homerun of the season yesterday. I heard someone say that by the end of the season, Judge will have at least 10 more homers than the Rockies' total wins for the year. That seems a safe bet.
As a Texas Rangers fan, I sat through many long, long, long hot sweltering summers in the bleachers with so little to cheer for. I almost couldn't believe that magical year of 2023 when we finally won it all. For now that's enough. But in a few years we'll be crying, as you noted, what have you done for me lately.
We can still be friends. Considering the Rockies have won fewer games than I have houseplants that are still alive, I’d say this feud is a bit one-sided. But really, congrats on win number nine. Double digits are just a dream away!
My Vegas 'insider' (definitely not a bookie!) tells me a Cubs-Yanks World Series is a long shot. He actually thinks it's a higher probability I'll come visit you in Colorado, whip up an amazing dinner, and we can catch the Series together. How does that sound?
I don't compete--I'm sometimes told I can't compete--but I'm not there yet with comparing. So as a White Sox fan, I'm grateful for the Rockies. (Speaking of baseball and spiritual practice, after Leo XIV became Pope, his beloved Sox have gone a torrid 7-8.)
Ommm, my. Tis the season of disappointments and elations. Good thing I don't follow. Life has its own ups and downs to contend with.

And from the wonderful world of hockey! How about those Toronto Maple Leafs!!!!!!
Sry for the game seven loss. I feel your specific pain!

Oh dear.

The joy of a championship lasts until the first game of the next season. Then suffering resumes.
Great piece, PM. But, *ouch* - the Rockies beat my Yankees yesterday for their 9th win of the season.
Oh, those are YOUR Yankees? 😤And we’d been getting along so well until now.
We can still be friends. Considering the Rockies have won fewer games than I have houseplants that are still alive, I’d say this feud is a bit one-sided. But really, congrats on win number nine. Double digits are just a dream away!
Ok back off. I’m a CUBS fan. Couldn’t care less about the Rox. See you in the World Series!

I’m ready! Go Cubs!

We’ve all been looking for a sign of true divinity in Pope Leo. If the Sox are competent now, that would be said sign.
